As the mother of a child with Noonan syndrome and as a naturopathic practitioner, I support families with phytotherapy, in Zurich and through online consultations worldwide in five languages.

A Very Personal Story

When my suspicion was confirmed that our son had Noonan syndrome, I felt relief at finally having a diagnosis after three years, yet at the same time my world collapsed. I sat in the doctor's office, listening. My thoughts were spinning. Genetic mutation. Heart defect. Developmental delay. Short stature. Words that frightened me.

In the weeks and months that followed, I read everything I could find. Medical studies, parent forums, personal accounts. I wanted to understand. I wanted to help. I wanted my child to have a good life.

Today, years later, I can say: Noonan syndrome is part of our lives, but it does not define us. Our son is turning 19 and will start his apprenticeship this summer. Yes, school was sometimes harder for him, maths and other subjects were not his strength. But when he enters a room, you notice. He approaches people, makes them laugh, connects instantly wherever he goes. In the things that happen between people, he is ahead of all of us. That taught me something: strengths do not always show up in school grades.

Sometimes they show up in how someone treats other people. Alongside Noonan syndrome, ADHD is also part of our daily life. Routine, patience, and the right medicinal plants help us manage both.

This experience shaped me as a mother. And it changed my work as a naturopathic practitioner. Because I know today what families need when they have just received this diagnosis.

What Is Noonan Syndrome?

Noonan syndrome is a genetic condition that can affect different areas of the body. Not every child has the same symptoms; some have a heart defect, others do not. Some are smaller than children of the same age, others develop quite normally.

Common features include heart problems, developmental delays, increased susceptibility to infections, and feeding difficulties or failure to thrive in the early years.

But, and this is important: every child is different. The diagnosis does not determine what your child's life will look like.

Detailed medical information is available from the Noonan Syndrome Foundation.

The Dual Perspective

I understand both sides. As a mother, I know the sleepless nights, the worry before every doctor's appointment, the question: will my child be able to live a normal life?

As a naturopathic practitioner, I know: conventional medicine is absolutely necessary.

The cardiologist, the endocrinologist, the therapists, they all have their important place. Without them, there would be no good care.

But I also know: there are areas where complementary medicine can help. Not as a replacement, but as a complement.

Where Gentle Support Can Make a Difference

Strengthening the immune system. Children with Noonan syndrome are often more susceptible to infections. With my son, it was the same: every cold turned into bronchitis, every infection lasted weeks. This is where phytotherapy made a real difference. Elderberry syrup for prevention, thyme for coughs, gentle support for the gut flora. Nothing spectacular, but steady. The gaps between infections grew longer, recovery became faster. Add to that: vitamin D in winter, a nutrient-rich diet, enough sleep. The basics, but they work.

Supporting digestion. Many Noonan children have digestive difficulties. Stomach aches, constipation, sometimes trouble eating. Here too, natural medicine can offer gentle support: with herbal teas, with an adapted diet, with time and patience. With my son, we discovered that certain foods did not agree with him. That was a process, not a quick fix, but an important step.

Energy and exhaustion. Noonan children are often more quickly exhausted than others. That is frustrating, for the child and for the parents. Here too, there are no miracle cures, but gentle support: movement in small doses, planning rest breaks, shaping daily life so the child is not constantly overwhelmed. And sometimes what helps most is simply knowing: it is okay if my child is slower. It is okay if they need more breaks.

Why Holistic?

Holistic means, for me: we look at the whole child. Not just the heart defect, not just the height, not just the development. But the child as a whole person, with their own personality.

Conventional medicine and natural medicine are not opposites. On the contrary, they complement each other beautifully. The cardiologist monitors the heart, I support the immune system. The physiotherapist promotes movement, I look at nutrition. Together, we give the child what they need.

And sometimes, as I have learned as a mother, the most important thing is simply: being there. Listening. Having patience. Trusting.

Strengthening the immune system in daily life: A daily spoonful of elderberry syrup in winter and a nutrient rich, varied diet are small steps with a big effect.

Observing digestion: Keep a simple food diary for two weeks. Note what your child eats and how they feel afterwards. Patterns often emerge that were invisible before.

Allowing breaks: Plan conscious rest periods into your daily routine. Noonan children often need more recovery time than their peers, and that is completely fine.

What I Want to Share with Other Families

If you have just received the diagnosis of Noonan syndrome, I know how you feel. The fear, the overwhelm, the thousand questions.

I cannot promise you that everything will be easy. But I can tell you: you are not alone. There are ways to support your child. There is hope. And there are other families who have already walked this path.

In my practice, I support families with Noonan children with everything I can offer as a naturopathic practitioner, but also with everything I know as the mother of a Noonan child.

No grand promises. No miracle cures. But an open ear, practical help, and the experience of someone who knows both sides.

Would you like to chat?

If you have a child with Noonan syndrome and are looking for support – whether regarding diet, the immune system, digestion, or simply to have a chat with another mum – I’d love to hear from you.

I support families with Noonan children in my practice in Zurich and through online consultations worldwide, in five languages: German, English, French, Italian, and Greek.

Sometimes it helps just to speak with someone who understands.

No quick promises, no miracle cures. Just an honest look and a natural approach that has stood the test of time.
